RUSSIAN RESCUE BOAT IS FULL THROTTLE FUN AT HOUSTON SUMMER BOAT SHOW

Georgia Man Tests Super-Fast Boat

Many of them were experiments like a super-fast rescue boat powered by an aircraft fighter engine.

The Russians also spent $6 million making three eight-man boats that would go 150 mph. One of them found its way to North Georgia.

The orchard near Clarksville, Ga., is known as one of the best golf courses in the state, but today one of the lakes on the course is being used to test the N007.

Jerry Shulte, a former German businessman who now lives on the golf course, has refurbished the boat and until today wasn't even sure it would float.

It did. Now he wants to see if it will really fly a foot off the water on a cushion of air after it gets up to a certain speed.

"It goes about 150 miles an hour," Shulte said. "'Are you gonna go that fast in it?' Probably not 150, but I'd like to take it once on a big lake and go fast in it."

Shulte is expected to take the boat to North Carolina this weekend for more testing.

He's not sure about characteristics of the N007 because the pages that might spell that out for him are written in Russian. Other parts of the manual are simply marked secret.

Does that make Shulte a little afraid of the machine?

"Not at all," Shulte said. "It's a beautiful machine. It's very solidly built. It's designed really nice, and I think there's nothing to be afraid of.

Surely he wouldn't push the throttle of this boat to its limits before he realizes his ultimate dream for it.

"What I would like to do with it is have it in the movies, like a James Bond movie or Indiana Jones," Shulte said.

He also would like to take it to car shows, boat shows and Nascar events.

Since just starting the engine draws a crowd, if it really flies, it might someday be a movie star.
